‘Self-Love’ is a term that’s being thrown around A LOT lately, and for good reason. People are finally beginning to wake up and see the importance of self-love and the role it plays in our lives. One question I often get asked is…
“What does self-love actually mean?”
Sounds simple enough right? WRONG. There are SO many myths around the idea of self-love — about how perfect life becomes… but life will never be perfect, we just become better at managing our life experiences.
Let me break it down for you… It’s time to demystify self-love!
MYTH: Self-love is about feeling perfect and whole all the time.
TRUTH: Even with a full tank of love, you’re still bound to feel imperfect and broken at times. Self-love is about embracing yourself for those imperfections and allowing yourself to feel broken sometimes. After all, we’re human, and humans feel things.
MYTH: Self-love allows you to feel happiness all the time.
TRUTH: Happiness is definitely a by-product of self-love, but we will still experience those sad, yucky-feeling days. But that’s ok, because when we love ourselves fully, we’ll accept those days for what they are.
MYTH: Self-love leads to healthy relationships.
TRUTH: It takes 2 people to maintain a healthy relationship, and sometimes the people you date are simply just assholes. It has NOTHING to do with a lack of self-love… they’re just assholes. Where self-love comes into play is in the part where you walk away from the assholes.
MYTH: Self-love creates an armor that makes you invincible to insults and criticism.
TRUTH: Insults and criticism can hurt even the strongest self-love warriors. But these warriors will choose to counteract their hurt feelings with compassion. Self-love allows us to bounce back from these attacks with ease and grace.
MYTH: Self-love means you no longer feel fear or experience limiting beliefs.
TRUTH: Sorry to break it to you but fears and limiting beliefs will STILL creep into your life, even with a full tank of love. But self-love allows you to look your fears and LB’s straight in their ugly faces… it empowers you to fight back.
The truth about self-love…
It’s like a tool-belt; you gain tools to help you through even the toughest of experiences, because let’s face it… tough experiences WILL continue to be placed on your path. But with a full tank of love, you’ll have all the tools you need to work through those experiences, and the emotions that they stir up within you.
You’ll still fall…
You’ll still experience sadness…
You’ll still feel anger in certain situations…
But you’ll react to all these experiences in a different way. Gone are the days of falling down the hole and waiting to be saved…
YOU will save you.
You will climb out of those holes.
You will come face-to-face with your fears and limiting beliefs.
And you will bounce back stronger each and every single time.
THAT is the true essence of self-love. Life won’t magically become perfect; you’ll simply become better at creating a life you love.
